FRAGRANCES
Understory Vol. 3 follows the tradition of handblended, small-batch production that defines Vintner’s Daughter. Founder April Gargiulo designed the release as a one-of-a-kind creation, with each vintage of Understory carrying its own subtle variations. This approach turns every bottle into a snapshot of the year it was crafted, never to be reproduced. That rarity fuels demand, positioning the series as a collector’s item for fragrance enthusiasts and loyal followers of the brand.
The composition of Understory Vol. 3 brings together a woodland-inspired bouquet. The top opens with midnight jasmine and violet, followed by coastal conifers and bay at the mid notes. Moss and petals ground the base, delivering a fragrance built to evolve on the skin throughout the day. Unlike conventional scents designed to stay static, the formula shifts over time, inviting wearers to experience its complexity in layers. Developed with perfumer Loreto Remsing, the perfume takes cues from the understory of Northern California’s redwood forests. That environment, defined by mosses, ferns, and shaded flora, inspired the fragrance’s balance between earthiness and delicacy.
Beyond scent, the bottle and case elevate the release into an object of design. This year’s edition features a violet glass bottle etched with an inspirational quote from Gargiulo’s mentor, herbalist and author Rosemary Gladstar: “The plants have enough wisdom to transform our limited vision.” The packaging also reflects a new direction, with a black vegan leather case lined in citrine velvet. The size accommodates a lipstick or small accessory, giving it function in addition to presentation. Gargiulo describes the design as an interplay between ancient botanical craft and modern chic utility.
The collaborative design process underscores the importance of mentorship and collaboration in the creation of Understory Vol. 3. Gladstar’s presence in the project connects the fragrance to a broader lineage of herbal wisdom, while Remsing’s expertise anchors the perfume in professional craft.
With only 300 bottles produced, Understory Vol. 3 positions itself as both a sensory and collectible experience. Its limited availability and evolving formula ensure that no two vintages feel the same.
