Vintner’s Daughter introduces Understory Vol. 4, the fourth vintage of its limited-edition perfume oil, accompanied by a botanical soundscape developed from the energetic frequencies of the fragrance’s raw whole plant ingredients.
FRAGRANCES
The project expands the sensory experience around Understory through sound. To create the composition, the team used specialized technology to capture subtle electrical variations within the petals, leaves and roots of the living plants used in the fragrance. Those natural energy waves were translated into sound and recorded as part of an original musical score.
Friday Creative in Bergamo, Italy, mixed the recordings into the final composition, allowing the plants themselves to shape the accompanying audio experience.

The fragrance arrives in a violet-hued bottle featuring a QR code entwined with vine imagery. Wearers can scan the code to access the soundscape while applying the perfume oil to their pulse points, connecting the scent with the music created from its botanical ingredients.
“We wanted to turn this moment of application into a deeply grounding ritual,” says April Gargiulo, founder and CEO of Vintner’s Daughter. She explains that the brand’s work draws inspiration from the intelligence of the living world and that the project aims to create a closer connection between the wearer and the botanicals used in the fragrance.
Understory Vol. 4 was developed with master perfumer Loreto Remsing and takes inspiration from the abundant plant life found beneath the canopy of Northern California’s Redwood forests. The fragrance references the layered botanical environment of these ecosystems through a composition built around floral, green and woody notes.

The scent opens with midnight jasmine and violet, creating a floral introduction that leads into coastal conifers and bay at the center of the composition. Delicate moss and petals form the base, completing the fragrance with softer botanical notes.
The perfume oil and its accompanying soundscape work together as a single sensory concept. The audio element follows the same ingredients that shape the fragrance, using their electrical activity as source material for the musical score.
Understory Vol. 4 continues the brand’s exploration of the perfume oil through a new vintage, with this edition introducing sound as part of the experience for the first time.
