Dove‘s new Real Beauty Campaign is hoping to make women rethink their own beauty.

If you’re a woman and looking to feel bad about your body, a good way to go about it is to spend some time staring at beauty ads.

So, for its latest ad campaign, Dove decided to conduct a social experiment that explored how women viewed their own beauty in contrast to what others see.

The company asked selected women to describe themselves to FBI-trained forensic artist Gil Zamora. The artist couldn’t see the women and drew them based on how the women described themselves.

Next, Dove brought in strangers to describe the same women to the artist. Zamora made a second portrait, based on the stranger’s description.

The results were dramatically different.

The women’s descriptions of themselves were much more harsh, and resulted in more unflattering  portraits. Many of the women were shocked to see the stark contrast between the two drawings, showing that most of us tend to underestimate the way we look.

Dove believes we get so caught up in criticizing our flaws that we miss what’s beautiful about us. The company’s message: “You’re more beautiful than you think.”

Some have criticized the campaign, saying it focuses too much on appearance as a sign of self-worth. Others dislike it because of the lack of diversity among the participants.
